Paving the way to safer active urban mobility:

Challenges and opportunities

The objective of the conference is to support the understanding and the execution of suitable approaches to move towards a fatal-free road traffic system. One of such strategies is the “Fault Tolerant System Approach” building on the fact that human and – if we consider automated vehicles as well – machine-made errors must not lead to severe injuries or fatalities.

Conference topics

While in many countries the number of severe and fatal road user crashes has decreased over the past decades, the number of seriously injured and killed vulnerable road users has increased. Additionally, vehicles of different automation levels are already active road users leading to challenges organizing a safer mixed traffic. It is important to focus on various types of road user crashes involving vulnerable road users as well as considering methods to evaluate the safety of automated vehicles in mixed traffic. These challenges go hand in hand with novel methods of data generation and data enhancement for traffic safety analysis. Therefore, ways to improve the quality of road safety data including performant methods for data collection, data fusion, and data enhancement are urgently needed. The need for adequate information is corroborated by the fact that road user crashes are rare events by nature, even more so in countries where crash numbers have decreased but still remain a societal problem. Contributions featuring innovative methods and tools for the assessment of road safety, the reduction of the impacts of road crashes as well as the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the traffic safety situation are also welcomed. Contributions featuring measures for road crash prevention and severity reduction, as well as methods and tools to model, diagnose, improve, and evaluate road safety are appreciated. A non-exhaustive list of topics includes:

  • Improved data to support road safety analysis and policy development
  • Low-cost solutions for road safety improvement
  • Transferability of road safety measures
  • Safety aspects of urban and rural transport planning and sustainable mobility
  • Interactions between road users, vehicles, and infrastructure
  • Safety issues for different types of road users: drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, etc.
  • Safety aspects of autonomous technology and other technological measures

Special sessions:

  1. Processing of traffic safety relevant data: data generation, data fusion, data enhancement The scope of this session are methods for generating and enhancing data for traffic safety analysis and online risk assessment. This includes methods such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, signal processing, data fusion, road user behavior prediction, or even simulation based data augmentations, etc. Authors aiming at presenting in this session may mark the checkbox “Data enhancement” during the submission process to ensure the correct assignment of reviewers.
  2. Surrogate safety measures The scope of this session are practical and methodological studies using near-crashes or other safety-critical events in traffic for safety diagnosis. This includes traffic conflict observations, analysis of near-misses in naturalistic data and the use of microscopic simulations together with SSAM or similar models. Authors aiming at presenting in this session may mark the checkbox “SSM special session” during the submission process to ensure the correct assignment of reviewers.

Submission process

The submission processes will be managed with the help of EasyChair:

Authors who already submitted abstract in 2020 do not need to resubmit abstract again. Though, the confirmation of availability to present at the conference will be required (by e-mail).

If you have used EasyChair before, you can log in with the same credentials. In case this is your first time, you will need to create an account first. Your extended abstract (500 – 700 words) should include the following points:

  • Background
  • Aim
  • Method or methodological issues
  • Results obtained or expected
  • Conclusions

Please note that the abstract is submitted as a plain text and no pictures, HTML-formatting, etc. are possible. Do not use references unless absolutely necessary. The system will not accept abstracts longer than 700 words. Provide 3-6 keywords characterizing your submission.

The assessment will be based upon the following criteria: i) relevance of the topic in relation to the conference theme; ii) scientific quality and iii) likelihood to raise the interest of the present audience and to stimulate discussion. Early career researchers are encouraged to do their first presentation at the conference.

Contributions can be accepted for either a poster or an oral presentation.

  • Deadline for abstract submission: 31st May 2021
  • Notification of acceptance: 15th July 2021


Presentations should, as far and as much as possible, be based on empirical studies with the goal to improve understanding of road users’ risks, behaviours and their responses to the conditions in which they take part in traffic. Theoretical contributions related to these issues are welcomed, too.

Full papers

Full papers are not required but welcomed. Participants of the conference are encouraged to submit a full-text paper to a conference-related special issue of the scientific journal Transactions on Transport Sciences (TOTS) at Deadline for submissions is 30th September, 2021. Details about this special issue will be announced later. Besides that ICTCT offers to publish the full paper version (not peer reviewed) on the ICTCT homepage.
